RegioSec
The issues defining security in the XXI century are definitely different than the ones before World War I. As the world has become more interconnected, the security issues have transcended national borders. Today, it is impossible to think about national security without looking at the implications of state security issues on the region and vice versa. Regional security has to be the „challenge to deal with“ for every state in the region. If we talk about any armed conflict in the world, we will see that every state around that conflict is involved with the conflict in some way. (foreign fighters, weapon smuggling, migrations, decreasing of investments…).
today
We can’t talk about national security in all, without talking about the region. Yes, there are more than one or two subjects and not only the state and the region. The conflicts in the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa not only influence the states in the respective regions, but also shape regional security and have repercussion on the world order. Moreover, the emergence of non-state actors such as international organizations (UN, NATO, EU, BRICS), the contemporary security challenges (terrorism, migration, hybrid warfare, climate change) blur the line between what state and non-state is, and make the security architecture increasingly complex. Also, terrorist and transnational organized crime groups are a very big challenge for national security in many states in the world.
Every government that is serious about the security challenges have to consider challenges of the neighboring states when making National Security Strategy because these security threats are not limited with borders and should be considered likewise. To this end, addressing the intricate security issues that the world is facing nowadays, requires cooperation and tailored approaches that go beyond national frameworks.
Contemporary security
Contemporary security issues are far more different than a few centuries ago. If we look back in history before the XX century, most of the security threats to the state from outside were war threats, especially before 1648. and the Peace of Westfalia. This treaty is the turning point in turbulent history of Europe.
Peace of Westfalia didn’t stop the traditional security challenges like wars, but this challenges evolved with the evolution of the industry, banking, internet, media, social network… Of course, one of the security challenges are still armed conflicts like before XXI century. But we have to focus on different challenges. That represents today’s security problems like terrorism, transnational organized crime, migrations, poverty, climate changes, and other issues that characterize contemporary challenges for national, regional and global security.
Peace - illusion or not?
For the enthusiasts like us, peace is something we all have to work for. It is not easy, and maybe it will never be peace in the whole world but why not hope? Why not try to increase it as much as we can? One of the problems in armed conflicts is a reconciliation of the people after the conflict. We all have to look to the future. Never forget the past, but forgive and go on…
People in former Yugoslavia are just one example. Almost 30 years after the war, people are still struggling to find peace among themselves. One of the things that people have to realize is the ’other perspective’. To try to see things with less emotions and more objectivity. That is what we are trying to do with this project. To give people an objective insight on security challenges, to inform people and to give them a tool to see things indifferently. If we succeed in that, with only a few percents of the people that came and read an article, we will be proud.
At the end...
People that are gathered around this project are young experts in the field of security, eager to give their perspective about security challenges in the different regions of the world. And also to learn more about all the topics that are connected to the global, regional and national security. The difference between RegioSec and other similar projects is that we are opened to discuss the solutions.
That is what we will try with many following articles and we are eager to hear different thoughts. No one should fear of making mistake because it is the part of getting a greater knowledge. This is why we certainly will try to give our insight on different issues, challenges, and some case studies, and everyone is welcome to give us an opinion.
